Danish Life & Jewellery Design

by Daniel Bentley on March 9, 2012

I’d highly recommend visiting Denmark at least once in your life. It’s quite refreshing to see a nation so focussed on creating things of beauty, whether it’s a building or a sofa you know a lot of thought has gone into the design.

They are a people who embrace their history and traditions but don’t seem to be mired down by them.

I lived there for 10 years and speak the language fluently. In a way, it’s home for me.

The people themselves are very aware of the world around them and seem intent on making their mark. When you think about it, it’s pretty impressive for a nation with a population of only five and a half million to have made such a large impression, especially in the areas of design and technology.

One of the things I enjoy most is the appreciation the Danes have for design and art. I find it amazing that every day Danes know the names of, and celebrate the great designers that they have produced, Arne Jacobsen, Poul Henningsen and Jørn Utzon to name a few.

As a jewellery designer and craftsman I found great acceptance and understanding for my jewellery designs in Denmark. Though I have been influenced by Scandinavia, my jewellery still stands out as being something original and fresh. It must be the Australian in me.

Now, back in Australia, my jewellery is looked upon as very international which, I suppose it is. You be the judge.
