Mothers day is a great idea though I believe that many people save up for that day all year, instead of spreading the love more often.

It could be a seasonal thing, for example spoiling your wife/mum with a spa treatment in mid-winter, a beach breakfast in summer or a fabulous new bracelet for spring. Just don’t wait all year to do something special.

I’ve done the “Mum” thing for weeks at a time while Lene is in Europe with our new collections and it’s an incredible hard job. I certainly feel like a reward when she finally comes home!

So think about it…and show your love to your mum/wife…more often.

It’s quite refreshing to see a nation so focussed on creating things of beauty, whether it’s a building or a sofa you know a lot of thought has gone into the design.

They are a people who embrace their history and traditions but don’t seem to be mired down by them.

I lived there for 10 years and speak the language fluently. In a way, it’s home for me.

The people themselves are very aware of the world around them and seem intent on making their mark. When you think about it, it’s pretty impressive for a nation with a population of only five and a half million to have made such a large impression, especially in the areas of design and technology.

One of the things I enjoy most is the appreciation the Danes have for design and art. I find it amazing that every day Danes know the names of, and celebrate the great designers that they have produced, Arne Jacobsen, Poul Henningsen and Jørn Utzon to name a few.

As a jewellery designer and craftsman I found great acceptance and understanding for my jewellery designs in Denmark. Though I have been influenced by Scandinavia, my jewellery still stands out as being something original and fresh. It must be the Australian in me.

Now, back in Australia, my jewellery is looked upon as very international which, I suppose it is. You be the judge.

This summer holiday was brilliant. We escaped to the cool of the Southern Highlands SW of Sydney and spent 10 days unwinding after a super hectic Christmas trading period.

I found time to sit under a tree and sketch a few new jewellery designs for some up-coming collections. I was not supposed to think of work whilst on holidays though I’ve always drawn for relaxation.

Anyway, for the last few weeks I’ve been at the bench creating the new Sterling silver models from my sketches and it’s been such an enjoyable experience.

I’ll be posting some photos of the new jewellery designs when they’re done though in the mean time, here is a Sterling silver ring with 18 ct. gold, I made recently using a gem I bought in Idar-Oberstein, Germany. I designed this big piece using the facets of the specially cut Citrine as inspiration. It’s a one-off and goes in my private collection. Let me know what you think!

None know better the traumas faced by modern day suitors when making a proposal on Valentine’s Day, than Master Jewellery Daniel Bentley.

The scenario was always the same… a guy would come into Daniel’s boutique in the Danish city of Aarhus trying to find a ring that would please his girlfriend… and we all know the high risk involved. If she didn’t like the design or the diamond wasn’t big enough or he wasn’t sure of her taste etc, it could mean a failed attempt… which is particularly embarrassing if the proposal takes place in public, like a restaurant or around friends.

This is where Daniel often played Cupid – he would lend the guy a ring from his collection to make the proposal, once the girl accepted, she could come in and design her perfect ring…. great solution, everyone is happy.

Emotions play a big part in the designing process’, said Daniel, ‘not only does the jewellery need to be beautiful in its own right, but it has to make the wearer feel special and accentuate her own beauty‘… particularly on a special day like Valentine’s Day’.

Now that Daniel is back in Australia, recently launching a stunning collection of fine jewellery, he is once again looking forward to his ‘behind the scenes’ role on Valentine’s Day and with new pieces just released, there is a fabulous collection from which to choose.

I’d like to share our response with you …

Each piece has been designed and hand sculpted by master jeweller Daniel Bentley so there is continuity through the collection and a distinctive style. What truly sets our jewellery apart is not just our designs, it’s our philosophy and ideals.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

Our jewellery must be bold.

The uniqueness and originality of our designs is paramount.

They must make the wearer look stunning.

OUR IDEALS

Every design in the DANIEL BENTLEY FINE JEWELLERY range has a name and a story behind the inspiration.

We believe in inspiring our clients rather than following trends.

Our jewellery is manufactured to the highest quality and superbly hand-finished to an impeccable standard.

Our design philosophy is that each design is individually crafted by hand and CAD (Computer Aided Design) is not used in any aspect of either design or manufacture.

One of the outstanding aspects of our jewellery is the combination of the inspired design, the generous weight of metal used and the exquisite proportions coming together to create a feeling in the customer that the piece was designed exclusively for them.
